Mallorca to export potatoes to UK & northern Europe
A dry and mild winter has produced good quality potatoes in Mallorca this year, and a good proportion of them are set to be exported to the UK as British farmers struggle with their own poor harvest caused by the bad weather.

Sa Pobla in the north of Mallorca is famous in the Balearics for growing potatoes, and has started harvesting this years crop. Over half of the potatoes will be exported to the UK and also to Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium.
Thanks to the favourable weather this year the potato variety of choice, the waxy Lady Christl, has flourished and has produced a very good quality crop. The harvest should last through to June and farmers are hoping that the weather will remain kind (no frost and protection from high winds) to allow a continued good quality product.
Last year, 12.5 million kilos of potatoes were exported from Spain and around 7 millions kilos of these potatoes were from Mallorca.
Sa Pobla are very proud of their agricultural roots and they host a large agricultural fair in November which celebrates their local produce. Not only that but  sacks of potatoes are awarded as prizes for various races and competitions held throughout the year.
Mallorca Heritage announces plans for culturally important buildings

The department responsible for Culture & Heritage within the Consell de Mallorca yesterday announced a number of measures for buildings with, or hoping to receive, 'BIC' (Bien de Interés Cultural) protective status.

Can Lis, the house designed by Danish architect Jorn Utzon, is to be awarded BIC status in March. The architect, who is most famously known for designing the Sydney Opera House, created the house in Portopetro during the 1970's using sandstone, ceramics and tiles of the local area of Santanyi.
In the same area of south east Mallorca, the owners of Castle Santueri (already a holder of BIC status) had applied for permission to host guided tours around the castle and its grounds. These initial plans included placing a number of information boards around the grounds and the creation of a viewing platform. Whilst the plans were rejected by the heritage council, it was suggested that a team be put together to create a new plan that would allow small guided tours around the site, but would be more protective of the remains of the ruined castle.
The department has also approved the removal of a replica soundboard in Palma Cathedral that was used to amplify the services. This will create more space for the choir. The original soundboard had been designed by Antonio Gaudi but was removed in the 1970's because of its poor performance.

Boost to low season flights to Palma de Mallorca Airport

Government tries to secure more flights during November-March

The Government has been in talks with airlines operating in Russia, Scandinavia, Britain and other central European countries as they try to secure an increase in the number of flights to Mallorca during the off-peak season.

One of the main complaints from tourists and second-home owners in Mallorca has been about the lack of flights during the winter season. The main aim of increasing the number of flights during this time is to allow Mallorca to flourish as a winter destination that can offer much more than sun and sand, with activities like cycling and hiking,or cultural activities and festivals to enjoy.
A number of incentives have been agreed by the Development Committee of Air Routes for Son Sant Joan (Palma) Airport who will now enter negotiations with the airlines, focusing on flights in 2013 and 2014 between November-March. The Government have twenty contracts with airlines from Russia, Scandinavia, Central Europe and also the UK with EasyJet, Monarch and Ryanair who are all due to increase the number of routes they operate.
AENA (Spanish Airports and Air Navigation) which owns Palma Airport are already offering reductions to airlines of 20% on airport fees for existing routes and 50% for the first year on new routes and 25% in the second. The Government has been using these incentives as well as free advertising space and promotion through social media to encourage airlines to fly here.
As far as passenger incentives are concerned, Palma council will offer passengers on the first flight of each route free travel on the Palma sightseeing bus, or free entry to the Bellver Castle, or Pilar i Joan Miró Foundation.
